From last night’s show with Seth from Dufus

ah yes! Below is how we ended last night’s show which was one of the best Shaman’s Dens ever! N.Y.C. based Dufus [which is Seth] has been one of my personal favorites for years. He has been on the show years ago and was in my band in my last N.Y.C. performance. But last night was deep magic! I even backed him up on the piano on a few Songs [which is a first for me because, while I jam a lot, I never have tried to fit my piano into actual Songs!]. Moreover the interview was deep fun! But this last song [which i sprung on him as a request] took the night to a liquid dimension! Enjoy!

And today I see that Dufus’s latest cd made it on Captain Fred’s top cds list for the month!

Shaman’s Den

(Erika wrote:)

Last nights Shaman’s Den with Dufus/Seth-Herbert Faergolzia was amazing!! I loved it!!! Dufus’s passionate words, sounds, and guitar playing and farting horn sounds were delightful and tenderly deep! The duets with Frank on piano and vocals were amazing adding deep layers and waves to a fun magical expanding journey of tones and licks about life. The interview was great leaning about Dufus’s rock opera created by a tribal body and his 2 year old daughter powerfully exploring sound and piano as well as hearing about how he/Dufus tours and the making of their videos. I Enjoyed Frank and Linda telling Dufus about how they met, the story of the Blue House, the Outrageous Beauty Review and living fun passionate lives without debt. It was a great late night Shaman’s Den!

thanx frank…we’ll probably just have copies of it to distro and give away at shows…perhaps for donations…might have to cut it down a bit too so it can fit an audio CD…so perhaps we’ll just put in only the set we played together and cut out the part we played without you…i was thinking of having mikey do a cover for it…

will you be down for it mikey? it would be great if you could…i really dig your style…let me know if you are up for it…
we wanna incorporate more of other peoples art in our stuff just so it can be xposed to different people and circles…

we are also of thinking of doing more visual stuff with our music perhaps incorporating the different media and technology in what we do…also, i would be interested to do a LUVER show..lemme know how it workz?

anyways, what was the story about vale? im all for stories…

* * * * *

mikee would love to do the cover!

Now for the V. Vale story. Back in the Mabuhay days, it was obvious that I made him and his girlfriend extremely nervous. But over the years people have had a hard time believing me because after all he documented the fringes, etc. But a few months ago [when I was googling FRANK MOORE] I found this long essay at http://www.researchpubs.com/features/whatispunk.php.

What is Punk Rock and How Did It Begin?
an essay by V. Vale

Back in the Seventies in San Francisco, life was a lot simpler. The Punk Rock “Garden of Eden,” where Punk was born in San Francisco, was the Mabuhay Gardens on Broadway, the only venue in town that would dare host Punk Rock. Why? Because the policy of Dirk Dirksen, who booked the “Fab Mab,” was to give anyone at least one chance, without a preconceived, restrictive aesthetic. The Mab was open seven days a week, with three to five “acts” a night, so this was a lot of time slots to fill (this was before the rise of the DJ). Thus was created a nearly “anything goes” opportunity for anyone who came up with a live act. No other local club had this booking policy and this is the reason San Francisco Punk started at the Mabuhay.

One of the most unusual acts that played regularly through the first years of San Francisco Punk was Frank Moore’s Theatre (they have not gone down in Punk history). It was whispered that Frank, along with his wife Linda (who struck me as a kind of Manson girl), headed a commune in Berkeley, and that everyone slept together in one huge bed. Their act seemed a bit “creepy.” Frank, confined to a wheelchair, had the wizened, twisted little body of a geek or spastic, with flecks of drool on his clothing. He wore a headband with an antenna on his head that enabled him to communicate–usually in arhythmic shrieks and yelps that were near-impossible to decipher. But Linda seemed to understand him perfectly; she was his “medium.” Frank Moore’s group, which looked like Manson girl runaways and social misfits, enacted bizarre performances incorporating rants, music and dance that were definitely elementary enough to be “Punk Rock,” even though most Punk Rockers had difficulty processing the act and were puzzled … yet too baffled to show outright disparagement. Looking back, Frank Moore’s show truly realized the Punk credo of “Do It Yourself/Anyone Can Do It.” Because if Frank Moore could do it, truly anyone COULD do it. He took the “Do It Yourself/Anyone Can Do It” punk proclamation seemingly about as far as it could go.

Photos from The Simple Things on The Shaman’s Den – April 5, 2009

Here are some pictures from the night we performed for the folks at Luver.com. It was such a unique and amazing experience that we will never forget!

Frank’s words to introduce the show made my hair stand up – quite poetic and thoughtful.
“One of my favorite words is liminal, which is the state in between two states, combining the two states like dawn or twilight. When you just wake up from a dream. This band focuses on the space in between the notes which is silent, but they are not wimpy new agers. They are just The Simple Things.”

The Simple Things on the Shaman’s Den – April 5, 2009

We had an amazing and unique experience performing and recording a private show for the folks at Luver.com. Frank Moore (known for running for President and for his radical performance art and music) is a witty interviewer, who has a great bite to his questions that just makes you giggle. I loved the experience – and performing in his super colorful Bezerkeley home for him, Linda and Mikee was just one of those nights you can’t forget. They are each very creative and kind-hearted, and put a lot of time and effort into interviewing, filming and broadcasting band shows.

Here’s our podcast of the show, and the interview that followed.

Wait, this is a bunch of teens in a hip-hop group?

Yeesh, I hope their manager is just starting out, because that policy is going to block off a lot of interview opportunities for the band.

Jesse

… And yeah, I don’t know of any- ANY- KALX interviews where questions were pre-approved. (That’s probably why we’ve never had one with a President of the US, ha ha ha) The one I did with the NY Dolls this year was completely on the fly, and that was set up thru their super-professional management agency. We’ve had thousands of artists on the station over the past 45 years much huger than this group with no pre-approved questions.

* * * * *

yep, they’re teens. Their manager is Mr. Jiggle or some such name! You are quite right. Not only did he blow an opportunity for them, but he established a bad reputation for them.

pre-established questions at best makes for a boring show, no juice! Only a couple of people have asked for that in the eleven years of the show. A more common request is what areas will we cover. How should I know!? A conversation is an exploring journey!

Re: the taylor boys (Gi Dussault) II

(Frank wrote:)

exactly, Gi! And I don’t think that is something a journalist [which is one of the things we are] should ever do. They are scared that the pre- packaged image which they have invented will fall apart under the light of reality… Which is selling the artist short. My job on the show is to create an environment where the artist can play/be at her core. This most of the time makes the artist look good… And often bands play better on the show.. And the audience feels the reality of the show. But these people don’t trust their bands!

hey, is there any way that LUVER could air your show on a regular basis?

Hi Frank,

I agree so much with everything you said here. Protect the image and don t trust their bands. We don t like this kind of situation either. One chance, we don t have this kind of request too often.

Also, thanks for the offer but right now we just want to air on our own network at the moment. We really appreciate your offer. Maybe in the future. Thanks to think of us for this. 🙂

peace,
Gi

yes, and I usually can talk the person who’s making such a request into reason!

Re: Extraction (Gi Dussault) IV

Hard work, talent and passion, it’s why we have these great people on our shows and they feel it.
I’m very happy for you, Carrie Rodriguez is pretty good. You should have fun. 🙂

Have a nice day,
Gi

* * * * *

yes…. And we are also sexy, Gi!

And it looks like we are doing a special late night show tomorrow with Seth of N.Y.C. based Dufus… Another of my personal favorites! We play almost everything on LUVER. But we only play our favorites in our car! Both Dufus and Carrie play in our car!

Frank Moore

Re: Extraction (Gi Dussault) III

Wow! You have some great guests over there.

Thank you very much for the offer. Be sure if I come in SF one day, I ll be in contact with you and it will be an honor for me to meet you in person. 🙂

peace,
Gi

* * * * *

ah, yes GI! And now it looks like Carrie Rodriguez… One of my favorite singers /fiddle players will be on my show! How lucky are we?…. having bands come to our house to do concerts for us and interesting people coming to talk deeply with me! How did we get in this position?
