Shaman’s Den with Nellie

Last night’s guest on the Shaman’s Den was Nellie Wilson of the Sacred Touch School. She helps people expand their erotic life though in person instruction/workshops and through video learning on her website with Ed Ehrgott. Some of what she does is explore exercises with people that expand their erotic experience and believes that learning happens by experiencing in your body. Nellie spoke about her work with people one to one and about exploring their edges where they felt uncomfortable or tight while being erotic. Nellie talked about how Frank’s performances are much the same. Frank creates a play space and invites people in and he follows opportunities and openings as they arise. People can explore and expand and jump into the unknown, or sometimes they hold on and are unwilling to explore, staying safe.

Nellie spoke about how many people are holding on to being in control. She said sometimes people want to be in control when they are having an orgasm and they are concerned about how they will look when they have one. Linda said that holding onto control is not sexy, what is sexy is a person who is available and willing to jump, explore and surrender. People who are available without limits, that is what is sexy! When someone is available without limits people feel it and respond to it. They may not always know what it is but they feel it and they are drawn to it. Frank said that guys are always coming up to him and wondering how does a guy like him get all the girls? Nellie said there is pretty on the inside and there is pretty on the outside. Frank said that he is pretty all the time! He is available without limits. Nellie said that spoke to something in all of us deeply at the core. Frank and Linda talked about the many times when they were in other cities and they needed people to be in performances. People would find people who were sex performers and it was always them who had the most trouble jumping in. They said that they would be fine having sex on the stage with Frank but rocking naked on his lap they would not do. It is not usually the sex and nudity that makes people uncomfortable but the intimacy, the relationship. Frank’s focus is on relationships and he is always looking for and following opportunities to be intimate with people and that is what is sexy!

Nellie said that there needed to be a dictionary of new words to talk about erotic experiences. Frank had done it! He came up with the term eroplay to talk about erotic physical play for pleasure without the goal of orgasm, tansex another state of physical play without genital intercourse where there may be orgasm but orgasm is not the goal as in sex. Pantan describes the combination of various kinds of orgasm with an intensely small intimate nonlinear play. Linda said that when Frank had first come up with these terms to talk about erotic play people did not know what he was talking about. Then over time people knew exactly what he was talking about. Nellie said that she could come up with a few terms for the dictionary. Frank said that they could work on it together and she said she was busy with grad school right now. It seems like Frank and Nellie would have a lot to explore deeply together.

Frank is always finding and following ways of being intimate with people like asking Nellie if she would be a plant in his performance at the Pow Pow performance coming up. Nellie would be in the audience and she would feel turned on by Frank and be moved to come up to the stage and explore Frank’s body. The performance was going to be Frank looking out to the audience connecting with people and the plants would become turned on and come up to the stage and explore his body. Nellie said she was not sure that she had class on Friday but they could check in via email. She said that she did not feel very sexy on Friday nights and Frank said that he would turn her on. Nellie said, “I’m sure you would!” Frank said that it was fun to play with Nellie and she enjoyed that. Nellie said that there were more and more people out there she has found that are doing similar things that are wanting to have more human connections, to play and explore. Frank said that people are hungry again like they were 30 years ago!

Re: discussion on liability

hi artists:

i appreciate everyone’s opinions (some shared with all and some not shared with all) + am glad that you have spoke your minds + hearts!

first + foremost — i am very sorry if the waiver has upset anyone. that was not our intention. we were required to have a mandatory meeting with the climate theater this past week. at this meeting we were told that we had to complete the following or POW! POW! could NOT go on unless the following was taken care of:

1) we must provide our own insurance liability for the festival

OR

2) have artists sign a waiver that states that they will not sue POW! POW! (alyssa + guillermo) or the climate theater.

we don’t have thousands of dollars, and we didn’t want to ask you to pay anything, so we went with option #2, which we thought in this situation was the lesser of two evils.

we are not trying to attract anything negative + did not know that we had to have this implemented until last week. please bear with us with this.

if we don’t provide the climate theater with proof that all of our artists have agreed to take full responsibility for themselves if anything happens to them that they do on their own then we can’t have POW! POW! go on.

i promise you that we are NOT asking you to sign a waiver that states you will not offend anyone, and we will NOT ask you to sign a waiver like that!!! in terms of the question – “do we have to ask the audience to sign”…i see a piece developing out of that! 🙂 but the climate said that their insurance covers the audience members. if anyone wants to see the information we were provided about this i would be happy to share.

we appreciate everyone’s time, energy, thoughts, etc. about this festival. POW! POW! is going to be an awesome show. see you in less than 2 weeks! we can’t wait to see your work.

🙂
alyssa

ah, yes, Alyssa! Climate theater put you behind the eight ball by springing it on you two weeks before the show. They are a theater. So they [should have] known about their insurance issues. If the waiver was a part of the original agreement, I doubt that anyone would have a problem. But springing it on you is very unprofessional of them… And if they pulled out of the show, it would have been a breach of contract on their part. But you are right… The thing is to get the show on!

and yes, it’s a part of my piece! It shows the difference between THEATER and PERFORMANCE ART. In THEATER the audience and performers are in two separate realities. So they can insure the audience members but not the performers. [Mmmmmm, when we are in the audience, are we covered? Don’t ask them this –until after the festival!] But in performance art there’s no such clear division between audience and performers. Like most of my cast [if I have a cast] may be in the audience playing audience members. Will they be covered as audience members until they reveal themselves? Moreover I am inviting the audience members up on to the stage to be a part of my performance. Will they stop being covered? If so, when will they stop being covered? When they decide to be a participant, or when they start climbing the steps to the stage, or when they are actually on the stage? And what happens if I get off the stage and the “audience” participates? Who is covered? Oh those damn performance artists!

Re: IMPORTANT: Waiver of liability II

Dear Frank:

YOu know I have a lot of respect for you and for your work. I just want to let you know that we are required by law to have an insurance which, at this point, we can’t afford. We have already invested in the rental of the space and the publicity and the mailing from our own pockets.

Maybe if we were a big corporation we wouldn’t have to do this. Perhaps if we were the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts or the San Francisco Ballet we would have an insurance already payed for. We would also have an army of lawyers to deal with any trouble. If this was the case, then the artists’ expression would be jeopardized, dictated and censored by our shareholders, our funders or by our sponsors and consumers.

We have put a lot of work and love into this festival. Alyssa and I have invested many hours of our personal lives into this. We do this with pride just because we believe in free expression. We believe in grass roots art and we enjoy having people like you being part of this too. We also understand the sociopolitical implications of doing this in times when everybody else is afraid to speak out.

Please understand that one thing you can’t ask us to do after all of this, is to put the few things we own in life at risk just because of plain negligence.

Thanks for signing. We appreciate your understanding.

SIncerely,
gal*in_dog

gal_in, I understand what Alyssa and you are doing and greatly value it. I have been putting on events for over thirty years. So I know what you two are dealing with. But the legal shit attracts problems, which is why I always have avoided legal shit.

Re: IMPORTANT: Waiver of liability

Dear Artists:

We hate this legal stuff but the festival grew out of proportion this year and, hey, this is America, the land of the lawsuits. No big deal though. This is just to make sure that you are responsible if you hurt yourself or if you break something during your performance. Please sign and/or copy and paste this waiver of liability in an email and send it back to us as soon as possible. This will proof that you agree with the waiver. Hey this is America

And our job is to break the rules and laws that keep us down. Only laws and practices that break can be changed. I’d much rather sign a promisory note saying that I recognize that Alyssa and galin.dog are broke ass artists and Climate is a tiny non-profit artspace so of course if I hurt myself or someone else it’s my own damn fault and even if it isn’t I won’t sue another artist or small artist space because suing is neither creative, nor liberatory. I promise to work towards community not liability.

Keith

In case that’s not enough, here is my cut & pasted waiver:

while I will sign, I agree with Keith. I have found that such legal shit tends to bring more problems than it avoids. And imagine the artists who are coming from out of town… Spending money to get here… Being told they can’t perform if they don’t sign. It wasn’t in the original artist agreement. Will the audience members have to sign?

Such legal shit seems weird in the underground reality.

But I will sign! But don’t drop me down the stairs in my wheelchair! I have a high Power lawyer! And I know Alyssa, gal*in_dog, and CLIMATE THEATER have extremely deep pockets! Years ago The Kitchen in N.Y.C. pulled out a contract for me to sign minutes before my show… Basically for me to promise I wouldn’t offend anyone. I signed. But as I signed, I said I would offend… So sue me! And I kept that promise! But they didn’t sue!

Re: Fw: Tuesday Nights Shaman’s Den

not art if it was not scripted? think: ‘spontaneous’ (as so many WORLD KNOWN and greaet artists have been) think: ‘improvisation’ think “mime’ think how many actors ‘went off their movie script and…..get ready for this word now……IMPROVISED. Just “LET IT ALL HANG OUT.” from the millions of mini scripts percolating in the incredible cells of the brains.just waiting to be heard. I’m going to write a piece on IT’S NOT ART IF IT’S NOTSCRIPTED as a nouveau curious attempt to say that the first great blind poet Homer of ancient Greece was a hoax? because he was not scripted.

Re: important comp ticket policy

hi artists:

this is a very important message about the ticket/comp policy for POW! POW!. we have had to change what we originally listed in the artist agreement.

here’s what the artist agreement originally stated:
Each artist in the festival will receive 2 comp tickets total. The tickets can be used for any night. If there is more than 1 artist per group, the entire group will receive 2 tickets. Every participating artist will also receive free admission to each night of the festival.

this is the revision:
Each artist in the festival will receive 2 comp tickets total. The tickets can be used for any night. If there is more than 1 artist per group, the entire group will receive 2 tickets.
we are very, very sorry we have to change this, but we have been told that we have a limit of ONLY 49 people allowed in the climate theater per night. if we allow every participating artist – which totals over 30 people – into each night of POW! POW! for free, there will no room for any other audience…it will be all of POW! POW! watching all of POW! POW!. this is awesome, but…we want the world to see our work, right?! 🙂
so, here’s what we need from you:
NAME(S) OF WHO IS IN YOUR PIECE AND WHICH NIGHT YOU ARE PERFORMING

NAMES OF PEOPLE + NIGHTS WHO YOU WILL BE USING YOUR 2 COMP TICKETS.
also – please note that there was typo on our press release – the 4 day pass for the festival is $40, not $30. please change as necessary.

thanks!

Subject: Tuesday Nights Shaman’s Den

Last night’s guests on the Shaman’s Den were Alyssa Lee and Guillermo Galindo the produces, curators and directors of the Pow Pow mini performance Art Festival next month in San Francisco. At first it was hard to tell what the hell was going on! The guests were all covered up in costumes. The guy was in American flag pants and a T-shirt that said “security” on it. He had a ski mask on so that all you could see was his eyes. The woman had a scarf around her head so that only her face showed and Frank was saying, “Hey asshole and the woman was saying that Frank was an asshole and a lair, that he had lied to them.” At first I could not tell if it was a performance or if they were for real or how long this show would last! They said that they were conservative terrorists and that were against art. They kept calling their boss on their cell phone and writing things on pieces of paper and putting them in front of the camera. They wrote things about art on the pieces of paper and also kept writing “Pow Pow” on the pieces of paper. Then they would rip up the pieces of paper and throw them around the room.

Frank asked questions to take things deeper like what exactly was it that he had he done that they were against. He had already been investigated by Jessie Helms for being obscene. The woman said that she had just had sex with Jessie Helms at the airport last night. “He’s dead,” Frank said. The woman said that it did not matter. At some point the woman started to crack and started to question why she was a conservative terrorist and why was she following something that she did not actually believe in. She moved closer to Frank saying that she was an artist and doing art was a good thing but that she felt really lost without the guy “security guard” since he was protecting them all. Frank told her to just look into his eyes!! She did and she felt calmer. Meanwhile the security guard was making all kinds of faces and strange movements and the woman said that he was acting like a freak and Frank said not to judge him and that he would come and join them soon. The woman asked if she could live with Frank and Linda did they have room for her and they said yes. Eventually the guy who had melted down from a conservative terrorist to a freaky guy melted and joined them.

Frank and Linda talked about the woman who was a performance artist who had been at the Reality Playings performance last Saturday. She was a performance artist and she was unwilling and pissed about jumping in and using anyone who was there to do something spontaneous. She wanted to know what Frank’s plan was for the performance. When he said that he did not know that he did not have a plan. She could not understand how something could be art if it was not scripted and did not have a frame. Alyssa said that they had come up with the term Action Art.

Alyssa wanted to know about Frank, Linda and Mikke’s relationship and why they did not believe in marriage. Frank said they did not believe in marriage because marriage is based in, has its roots in ownership. She said that their relationship felt really good. She said that Frank is a Shaman! Frank ask Guillermo to talk about the Reality Playings performance that he had come to in September. He said that it was shamanic, that it was small and went right to the core. Guillermo talked about the group of people who had been at the performance and Frank talked about how they had fed each other in a restaurant before the performance. The leaders of the group that had come to the performance had asked Frank what would be a good thing they could do before the performance to get people ready. A few of them had fed each other but most people said that it was too intimate. Allysa wanted to know more about how Frank has always had someone feed him.

Frank asked them if they would be plants during his performance at the Pow Pow festival and they were excited about it. Frank asked Alyssa if she would explore his body at the Pow Pow performance and she said that she would and then Frank wanted to know if he could explore her body during the performance. She wanted to know if Frank could get turned on. Frank said that she could explore that during the performance and find out. Then she wanted to know if Frank could get an erection and he said yes but that he could be lying so she would find out during the performance. Everyone would be counting on her to find out during the performance!

Alyssa talked about a couple of the performances that she had done with duct tape and another one wrapping a garden in SF with saran wrap and Frank talked about doing that in the 70’s wrapping people in saran wrap, toilet paper and tin foil and then reading his poem Wrapping and Rocking. Alyssa read Frank’s poem Wrapping and Rocking and then Alyssa and Guillermo talked about their relationship and that they could not remember when they had met. They felt they had been friends from childhood or another life. Frank said that they were a tribal body and they said yes! They said to order tickets now for the Pow Pow festival since the space only holds 50 people and advanced tickets are on sale. So come to the Pow Pow festival to see Alyssa explore Frank’s body and see if Frank gets turned on!!
