Re: To the Other Side of Dreaming: Finding Housing & Putting Disability Justice Into Practice

Dear loved ones,

Mia Mingus (http://leavingevidence.wordpress.com/) and I have decided to live together and create/cultivate interdependent queer disabled korean diasporic radical women of color home together. We are embarking on a journey together to put pieces of disability justice into practice, love each other and live on the other side of dreaming. A huge part of this is our need, as crips, as queers, and women of color, as korean (and all) diasporic people; we need each other and we need you.

We’re reaching out across our bi-coastal networks to move to the Bay, specifically Berkeley because of the level of access that can be found there for disabled folks. This is a huge, complicated and multidimensional decision that we have struggled with and we will be writing more about it to you, our loved ones and family, in the coming months.

But right now we need you. We need help finding a place to live and creating a community careshift collective.

Need One: Affordable Accessible Housing is Not an Oxymoron: We dream about an amazing 2 bedroom wheelchair accessible house/housing filled with love and lots of light in Berkeley, CA… We hope to have a great landlord that understands disability justice, but it is not a requirement since we can use our crip super powers to work through anything and with anyone!

Need Two: Growing Collective Interdependent Access and Care Through the Cracks of State Systems: Evidently in this country, disabled people don’t move–and we certainly don’t move together. Our systems for disabled folks are broken, we know this. And we are trying to leverage what we can to get to a place where we could live outside of them, but until then… We need to create a community careshift collective to support me (Stacey) in the months I will be in Berkeley before my disability/medicaid services get started in California. I am a powerchair user and we need people who could come to our home in shifts to help me do things like get out of bed, use the bathroom, get dressed, etc… We dream of a group of community-minded, interdependent disabled and non-disabled folks to help out with these daily access needs. We dream of moving beyond capitalist notions of “payment” for care/access and instead want to have conversations and inspiration-sessions with those interested in what we can all offer and give. We especially invite folks who are interested in putting disability justice into practice and learning together with us.

Do you want to be part of creating collective access with us? Do you want to be part of creating something out of nothing that can hold us outside of the current broken and dignity-stealing systems we are up against?

Our first priority is housing. Please let us know of any information, contacts, or leads you have ASAP. Please pass this note on to folks of your own who might be able to help us. Thank you!

To the other side of dreaming,
Mia and Stacey

Aloha Stacey. I suggest you write to Frank Moore, who’s lived collectively in Berkeley for many years (and check out www.eroplay.com if you don’t know it). I’m cc’ing Frank. He’s recently out of the hospital, so not sure how quickly he, or someone else, will read this.

Good luck!

Steve

I’m here! I’ll send this to the esalon for you.
I have been living tribally for forty years. It is much more practical and stable… If you are friends /lovers committed to being there for one another on every level. During my six weeks of hospital stay, the state cut my /our money off. But we still had the six of us [and our very extended network of friends]. So we got through it. Without that I don’t know how people survive alone!

a big day!

we went to the doctor’s today. She ok’d the start of the process of the removing of the trach .

But the big news…. On our walk back to the car, we stopped in at Mokka [the great Cafe where the guys got their coffee during my hospital stay… We kept saying just wait until I am eating again!] I suggested we could drop in there! I ate a bowl of raspberry sorbet! yum! I had no problem. First time eating in a restaurant since the hospitalization. It’s a big day around here!

RE: FW: THE DR. SUSAN BLOCK SHOW on BTV, Ch.28, September 2010

Thanks so much Linda, for keeping the show going on BTV in the midst of all the medical upheaval. You are awesome!

And thank YOU Frank, for keeping yourself going, which keeps all the rest of us going… I hope you got my messages about how we talked about your courage, creativity and determination on my show every Saturday night while you were in the hospital. On one show, this caller was complaining that he could never get women because he was paraplegic, and I really let him have it, told him he was hiding under his wheelchair and to go directly to your websites for inspiration on how to be a friggin’ Rock n Roll Sex God surrounding by groupies and hot women, no matter what your so-called disabilities.

WE LOVE YOU, FRANK!

And we love you, Linda and Mikey and all the doctors and nurses who helped pull Frank through…

Here’s the updated BTV schedule page: http://drsusanblock.com/btv.htm

Just want to make sure you got this email, since I didn’t hear back from you…unless I somehow missed it… Though I haven’t gotten any personal emails from you besides the response to my donation, so I’m not sure if our email connection has gone haywire again…

Anyway, I’m glad to see by your responses on the e-salon that everything is progressing!

Xo Suzy

yes, suzy, we sure did get your email!

frank is still not full speed, thus the delay in his responding!

xxoo Linda

Ok, thanks J I understand. He seems to be making a remarkable recovery from the emails I see him shooting out thru e-salon, but I’m sure its tougher than it looks 😉

Much love

Suzy

Ah, yes, Suzy… I have been working up to replying to your great email. I want to talk about why people [crips and otherwise] can’t get /hold on to relationships. But I have been facing over a thousand email backlog… I have chipped it down to three hundred! But I am just regaining my typing speed. I’m also learning to eat and drink by mouth… And figuring out times in the day to do so. Then there are the doctor appointments. And until last week there has been a stream of visiting nurses, and physical /occupational /swallowing
therapists coming to the house. Today the swallowing and the occupational therapists came. Basically they don’t want to stop coming because it makes their day… So they are fighting to be able to keep coming.
Oh, I have to drink now!

Frank Moore

I am so happy Frank is doing great! I was pretty upset when I found out you’d had to return to Alta Bates after the discharge, but thankfully it wasn’t for long.

It’s a huge satisfaction to know Frank and you guys are enjoying being home again.

I will give love and thanks to everyone in critical care for you.

I love you guys and wish you the very best for the future.

Vince.
